error message
« on: February 24, 2007, 11:20:35 AM »
:-? hi, this is my first time so bear with me please. I get NTLDR is missing error on my sony laptop that I purchased second hand. I have three "system recovery CD", three "application  recovery CD", and one "click to DVD recovery cd". I looked up in a smartcomputing Q&A board, how to fix this and there were directions for it. I have a windowsXP OS. in the directions to repair this it keeps saying to use win2000 disk. I don't know where to start, with which disk, or if its the right suggestion to use. I don't know what the disks that I do have, mentioned above, mean either. which one would be my OS disk? can I use these at all to help. Is anyone fimiliar or following me with what I am asking. I am told it would cost 300 hundred at least to have this repaired at a bestbuy or where ever. I don't have that kind of money. I was suggested by smartcomputing magazine subscribers to go here and ask for help. Please ask any questions you need to help me.  I am not even sure if I am using this site right.  :o Please forgive my ignorance, and please accept my thank yous in advance. sincerely, and desparate, donna ( its a old sony vaio laptop that has been taken care of by original owner. I am asked for the password but i don't know it. I was told to go to another place to figure out how to do that., it would be such a waste if this cannot be fixed. it really is a nice little laptop., nice features and graphics. ) :-/  [smiley=sad.gif] I am going to try to attach the error solution I recieved. if it doesn't work sorry, but lets hope it does. like I said, I am new to this, and soooo tired of searching for help, (6 months now)  [smiley=embarassed.gif] I can't find file formats to open what I copied to my wordproccessor. it asked if I would allow it to open with my word pad, but I am worried that everyone would have access to all my stuff then. sorry I just don't know enough to do this. I chose to modify and I am deleteing the file if any were there.

I personally can't help you much, but someone will hopefully be with you shortly.  In the meantime, read the following and see if it gives you any insight at all...

There's a wide range of possibilities here.

The best option would be to boot off of a genuine, full-version XP OS disc.  However, it sounds like you don't have one.

Are the three system recovery CDs labeled 1,2,3?  If so, pop in CD 1, and then restart the computer.

If they aren't labeled, put one of them in and reboot.

Your BIOS should boot off of the CD and you might be able to restore the NTLDR file.

I HAVE JUST RECOVERED FROM 'NTLDR  MISSING 'ON MY HP  this is how!! and it may help you.
1.check there are no cd's in drives
2.switch on pc and tap key F10 when HP logo appears-this causes 'HP recovery'to open with options.
3.I then selected an option which took me to the factory Windows XP back up ( which HP provide on their pc's) and this enabled me to communicate with the pc.(this process deleted all my data files- the price I had to pay)
4.Restart pc hitting 'esc' button -this got me to the "BOOT MENU" .I chose to re boot from my cd drive.(Here I used my Acronis reboot  cd to restore my data  files etc from my external back up H/Disk -result was good)

Now I suspect that you do not have a back up but all other steps may be relevant to you.If you do not have Sony user book,(for equivalent steps) try getting it from internet or SONY by phone-also try SONY support on web for info. relating to this process that I have outlined above for my HP.
Good luck. :)

Sorry, I had to remove all the smilesys, color, etc. so I could read your post.

If you have a system recovery CD try booting with that in there. If it works it will erase your hard drive and start over. If you have important data to be backed up first, let us know.

The recovery process may require a hidden partition on the hard drive which may be damaged. You may be required to contact Sony for the details. You do not have a real Windows CD, as such, so that can make things difficult to do a repair. If you choose to go that route, it must be the same version as what is loaded. (We don't know what that is. XP Home or Pro? Service Pack?) I don't nderstand the Windows 2000 reference at all. Is that what it came with?

The fact that it may have a BIOS password can be limiting as there is NO way to remove that, to allow access to the BIOS.

I know this is a huge bump, but I just wanted to share a bit of info.

To clear ALL BIOS settings do these steps:

1) Unplug the power from the computer
2) Remove the MoBo battery (sometimes hard to find)
3) Hold the power on button for 10-20 seconds.

Boom, BIOS is reset.  Usually works.  My friend used to have to do that so he could play games on his old computer, because his parents locked the BIOS  ;)
