Wireless receiver problem

Hello,
I recently moved into a student house and we set up wireless internet.  I then bought a belkin wireless receiver (not sure of technical name sorry i'm not very computer literate), when it into the usb ports it works but in doing so cancels out most other usb ports and cd drive so i cannot access anything on my external hard drive or say play a cd at the same time as being on the internet.  Is there any way i can solve this problem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated,

    usb ports are not ecactly the safest way to hook your computer up to your internet source. do you have ethernet ports. they look almost like a phone line port they are just a little larger, try that if you have them.

    The OP states they have a wireless connection...
    Does telling them to go wired really help their current issue?  I think not...

    Anyway...
    Please give us the make/model of your computer...
    Operating system?
    Amount of installed RAM (memory)?

    How many USB ports are on this computer and how many of them are being utilized at the moment?

      My computer is a Medion computer, pentium 4, with windows xp.  It has 7 usb ports. The ram i am pretty certain is 512mb.

      When you safely remove the Belkin USB wireless adapter, are all devices connected to other USB ports available and working?  Including your CD drive?

      Did you install the Belkin software before you inserted the wireless adapter into the USB port?

      Are you maintaining the Windows XP operating system by visiting Windows update and downloading the latest "high-priority" updates?

      Is your malware protection up-to-date?  When's the last time you ran a malware scan on your computer?

      What firewall are you using on this computer?

      Please answer all the above questions with as much information as possible.

        USB ports are limited in the amount of power they can provide. The simplest solution might be to purchase an externally powered USB hub. (My 2¢ worth)

        Agreed...

        I think I did ask him how many he had and how many were being used...he says he has seven...but I don't think he actually stated how many are being used.

        Sorry, i forgot to mention that i am currently using, including the belkin wireless adapter, 4 of the 7 usb ports.  When i remove the belkin all other ports and cd drive become active.
        I did install the belkin software prior to use.
        I have the latest windows updates. My firewall is a programme called AVG, i have done a malware scan but nothing has been detected. Thanks

          Thanks for all your help guys but i have managed to solve the problem.  The computer has 5 usb ports at the back and 2 at the front, i have been using the front 2 for the belkin wireless adapter and the back 5 for the keyboard, external hard drive and printer. On switching the belkin to the back ports it still wouldnt let me run 2 things at once but once i switched a few of them round at the back swappin what was in each usb port it now works  ???. Not really sure why but it does so i'm happy.

          Glad to hear it's working out...but...it actually shouldn't have done it in the first place...

          If it ain't broke...don't fix it...that's my motto.

          However, you may want to keep 2kdummy's advice available...

          Front USB ports are notoriously under-powered in alot of systems...cost cutting i imagine, but it's a common problem.

            i noticed that they also don't like to work all the time and they come lose and break easily on desktops and laptops alike
