    « on: November 26, 2007, 07:23:07 AM »
Due to a slow computer im looking to increase the memory.
The mother board is asrock k7vm2 at present ive got 256mb of memory could any one tell me what is the maxixmum of memory i can have in this machine.
There is one empty memory slot i was going to add 512mb of memory.
Idid a free scan from a web site and it said ive already got maximum memory but i dont think this is true.
    Thanks for any help jhadd

That is not true. Which program told you that?

According to the Asrock site Your board can take up to 2GB of RAM:

    - Max. 2GB DDR or 2GB SDRAM
    - DDR 2 x DDR, DDR266/200
    - SDRAM 2 x SDRAM, PC133/100

      Go here:

      http://crucial.com/

Do the process and it will tell you how much your board can take.

Yes i found that on the Asrock web site do you think a memory upgrade would improve the performance.
The existing memory in the computer is PC2100 but it doesn't mention this memory stick on the web page will this be right.
        thanks again jhadd

the http:crucial is the web site that i did the scan on and it came up with the result i had maximum memory athough there is only 256mb of memory and there is a spare memory slot.

I would go with what the Asrock site says. That Crucial link Alan had posted is a great link and this is actually the first instance where I have seen it telling someone something which is wrong (unless I am completely wrong here, haha)

The memory you currently have installed is DDR266, so you could add another 1GB stick to your board which will improve performance a lot. The best thing to do would be, depending on how much RAM you will be wanting, is to set it up in dual channel. Either 2x 512MB sticks or 2x 1GB sticks.

Can I ask why it would not take 1GB sticks of either RAM?

Looking at the info provided, I can't see why it wouldn't... Just so I know where I'm going wrong with this...

OK, thanks. I was going with the "MAX Unbuffered SDRAM 2048Mb" part.

            No problem.
jhadd you can add up to 2G total to that machine but each stick can only be a maximum of 512Mg....

To have 2gb using 512mm sticks i would have to mix the memory 2 ddr in the ddr slots and 2 sticks in the sdram slots i thought you couldn't mix memory.

The MBoard manual is a bit nebulous on whether it will handle a 1G stick or not...mis-leading at best.
You're correct stating they cannot be mixed.
But i trust Crucial more than i trust MBoard manuf. specs.
I'd borrow if you can a 1G stick of the flavor of your choice and test it first before i would spend the money.
Chances are they advertised a 2G capacity when in fact it is only 1G.
