I have a e-machine and I tried to plug in a hp monitor and now my e-machine does not power on. Could I have damaged it by trying to use an hp monitor? Are they not compatable?

Using an HP monitor shouldn't have damaged your system (otherwise they would have catchy names like "Dirty Harry", "Terminator" or "Assassin".  Disconnecting or connecting the monitor while either the monitor or system is powered on could.
