    Ownership of files
    « on: January 01, 2008, 12:44:03 PM »
I am running vista home edition as administrator. i have an ebook 300g with everything i had on my old computer (ran xp prof. ed.). i am having trouble getting all the files off of it. some show up but i know for a fact there are more. mainly pics, movies, music, etc. i have found that i have to take ownership of everything on the drive but it is not an option. could some one please walk me through this or suggest a program to extract and/or navigate this drive. thank you in advance.

Try taking ownership of the whole drive instead of individual folders...this has worked fine for me.

"File ownership can not be applied on insecure file systems; there is no support for ACLs."  I emailed the manufactor of the external hard drive(western digital) and told them they could either tell me how to get my kids pics off of this P.O.S. or refund my money. OOOHHHH, I wonder if they will take me seriously.

Wish i'd have known it was an eBook Western Digital...if you use the software that ships with those it uses a propietary file system designed to supposedly be more secure but everything i've read is less than a glowing review.
I'd be interested in WD's response and if there is in fact a workaround for this so keep us posted.

If in fact you do retrieve your data i'd suggest a clean wipe of that drive afterwards and not installing the software the 2nd time around.

          seeya.

Get yourself one of those, then you can hook up most any kind of harddrive to your computer via USB.

On another note, have you turned off simple file sharing?
