Is this the only hard drive in the computer? If you have multiple drives, try removing all others that you're not going to use until after XP installation. In any case, this could be a number of things.

    1) Power supply isn't good enough to support more hardware (or is dying).
    2) Memory is not seated correctly or is going bad.
    3) Any of a number of hardware pieces are going bad.

Anyway, try removing any hard drives you're not going to use during installation. Check your memory (perhaps it got nudged when you put in the new hard drive and needs reseated). Check your other hardware (sound/video cards, etc.) and reseat them if needed.

We do need to know exactly what model of HP this is. That way we know what you're working with. In addition to that, what other hardware have you added to it, if any.

im guessing its the hard drive as i tried with a 6 gig and it loads up fine . i even tried the 500 in another comp and i can install windows in it but when i put the hard drive back in with windows installed on another comp it says NTLDR is missing its like i cant boot off that hard drive.Ive looked in bois and it show as bootable

        HP pavilion 7965

is there a setting in bois that allows it to become bootable  device, its the only hard drive in the com

You can't install Windows XP on one computer then move it to another. It almost always will not boot.

Try the other suggestions I made.

Is this a shiny XP CD with holograms that says Microsoft all over it ? ?

Why not use the CD that shipped with the HDD to prepare it for an OS install ? ?
If you didn't get one it can be DLoaded from the drive manuf. site...

          Thanks for your responce Patio

I've figured out the problem it was in the BIOS system, the drive was set to auto, which for some reason wouldn't allow a 500 gig hard drive. I just change a setting to larger and it worked

thanks again for the fast responce
