    How to access Router settings?

Change the "Basic transmission" to 1-2 mbps, and the TX rate to 2mbps. This is typically done by logging in to the router's setup utility, click on the "Wireless Tab," and then the "Advanced Wireless Settings" sub-tab directly below it.
How exactly do I do this? I'm using a linksys WRT54G with windows XP

Oh, and while you're in the router, change the password from the default "admin" or "password."  Anyone who wants to attack your router will try those first!
