Upgrade RAM Laptop, Need Technical Advice
    « on: July 18, 2008, 05:00:31 AM »
I have a Toshiba laptop model SA10-S113, 1.99 GHZ speed, 80 GB HDD, 256 MB DDR SDRam (Hynix brand, PC 2100S, 266 MHZ bus speed, CL 2.5, Support Voltage=2.5V, Bandwidth=2.1GBs, 200-Pin SODIMM). As per its User Guide, the laptop memory can be upgraded to a maximum of 1 GB only. The original OS is Win XP Home which I have updated to Service Pack 3 about 2 weeks ago. I want to upgrade the RAM to 2 pcs 512MB or a total of 1 GB. My question is: if I want to upgrade my RAM with 2 pcs 512MB, PC 2700, 333MHZ bus speed, CL 2.5, Support Voltage=2.5V, Bandwidth=2.7GBs, 200-Pin SODIMM, will this be compatible with the existing specs of my laptop? Will there be no adverse effect as the bus speed and bandwith have increase? Or will I follow the original specs of my RAM (Hynix brand, PC 2100S, 266 MHZ, CL 2.5, Support Voltage=2.5V, Bandwidth=2.1GBs, 200-Pin SODIMM) with 2 pcs 512MB capacity? Please give me technical advice on this proposed RAM upgradation. Thank you very much.

I would advise using the memory scanner here to find what RAM you should use, and then either purchase it from Crucial or go elsewhere for the same specifications.
I think you'll find SDRAM, especially SODIMM SDRAM, to be very expensive and a little hard to find, although I could be wrong.

Thank you for your reply. I forget to tell that my plan is to totally replace the existing 1 pc 256MB DDR RAM, 266MHZ with 2 pcs 512MB DDR RAM either 266MHZ or 333MHZ bus speed. If I will replace my existing RAM (266MHZ, PC 2100) with 333MHZ (PC 2700), will my laptop become faster in terms of bus speed? By the way, the specs of my motherboard is Toshiba brand, model Portable PC, Version AO, Chipset=Intel i852GM, Rev.=A1, Southbridge=Intel 82801DB (ICH4-M), LPCIO=SMSC. For its BIOS, the brand is Toshiba, Version1.20, Date=05/20/2003

The increase in speed gained from changing to 333MHz RAM would not be noticeable - if it costs more, don't bother to buy it over the 266Mhz RAM.

Thanks for your advice about the change of RAM bus speed (from 266MHZ to 333MHZ, which will not be noticeable). By the way, since I can have the same 266MHZ bus speed, if I use my existing 256MB DDR RAM + a 512MB, 266MHZ RAM (all other specs remain the same) or a total of 768MB, 266MHZ RAM, is this okay? I mean will they be compatible as one is 256MB while the other one is 512MB? Will there be no adverse effect on the performance or stability of my laptop? Your advice on this will be appreciated. Thanks.

That will be fine, provided that the 512Mb stick is compatible with the laptop.

@Bernee: Don't know where you are from, but for a frame of reference, http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010260381+1052907864+1309221119&name=DDR+266+(PC+2100)
If you don't have time to do it right
...when will you have time to do it over?
