Dropdown Bar
« on: August 19, 2008, 06:43:58 PM »
So I have had a recent problem hooking up my Internet Exporer in my apartment. I was using an unsecured wireless network temporarily ( 1day ) until my router was programmed.  I then logged on the next morning and something that I did not view was on my drop down bar and it was a direct link to a site.  I guess my question is, is that even possible or is the only thing on your personal internet something that someone had to type in themselves. I am wondering if someone else is on my computer or if the unsecured internet could possible do that. Please I need an answer!! I have tried to search it and can't find anything out. Thanks in advance  :-\. Oh and btw the link was for realitykings for those of you who know what that is...It also showed up on the computers cookies so doesnt that mean it was on my computer. I am confused..

I assume you refer to address bar drop down?  if it shows then it should show in history also.

If you didn't vist there then can't help but wonder if someone did ........ unless you followed a link without realising.  So far - bit wierd.

It's possible that your computer was accessed remotely, but I'm not sure how likely that is.  Do you have firewall software installed?  Also, search for the site in your History.  When you find it, take a look at all of the other sites that were visited that day.  Do any of them seem unfamiliar as well?  Does anyone else have access to your computer, like a friend or roommate?

Thanks everyone. Yea it was in my history or the cookies or whatever too..All the other sites and links were stuff that i viewed. I didnt know if it is because of the Unsecured wireless but yea i do have firewall... ??? Umm and my fiance uses the computer so yea...Is it likely that he typed it in and is denying it. Because as far as I know if you didnt type it in it wont appear on your dropdown bar. Could it be a virus?

IMO very unlikely - not aware of any nasties that would do that.

A virus is possible, but I also don't think that's the case because they typically don't act this way.  It sounds to me like your fiancé was just feeling a little frisky and doesn't want you to know.  Heh.  Or, to give him the benefit of the doubt, it could simply be spam from another site.  Perhaps a pop-up.  Although it's the most common way, a URL doesn't have to be typed in manually for it to show up in the drop-down list.

Of course, if it'll make you feel better, it wouldn't hurt to run a virus scan.
