Generally you "double-click" a desktop icon to open it.  From the Start Menu or Quick Launch Toolbar you "single-click" an icon to open.

To open the desktop icons you have to double click them, otherwise they are not open at all.

Okay, you got me...  It would be courteous, logical, and professional to permit the Original Poster (OP) to reply with more information before speculating on a solution.  (And, as first respondent, allowing you to work the thread with the first crack at a solution.)

I wish I could say it won't happen again... but it probably will.

is it possible that some one would be playing a prank on you. theres a funny prank where a person takes a screenshot of your desktop and saves it in paint as an image. then sets that image to the desktop, and hides all the icons.

to get it back. rt click on desktop, select "arrange icons by", and make sure "show all desktop icons" has a check next to it.

If you don't have time to do it right
...when will you have time to do it over?
