External dvd writer stopped working

Hi all
external dvd writer stopped working and it is not being recognised by my pc.
It is xp and the writer is samsung super writemaster its a plug and play but when i plug it in i cannot see it on (my computor and i cannot write anything to it using nero as it cannot be found
Any ideas how i can reinstall it

Does it show up / function if you plug it into another machine ? ?

unfortunately i do not have another machine to plug it into to try it but it is only a few weeks old so i dont think the problem is with the writer
