    Multiple task managers
    « on: January 03, 2009, 11:55:16 AM »
A friend of my call me with a problem concerning Task Manager.
She  has  HP computer with Windows XP.  She went to close a program that was not responding through task manager. Upon opening task manager she observe that she had 60+ incidents of Task Manager running. She was able to eventually able to close each one down.  AND NO Ctrl, ALT Delete was not use/ press that many times..... SHort of Doing a Hard shut down she had to click each incident and shut it down one by one, Plus the program she originally needed to close.
My question is how is this possible and what can be done to prevent this from happening again. ???

    CLARIFICATION

The 60 + incidents were open when she when to open task manager to close the troublesome page/ program. They did not open after the fact. Sticky keys, being in a hurry... so forth is "not" the problem

Pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE 60+ times can cause that many Task Managers to open.

Solution: Be patient.  Don't press it so many times.  If the PC is not responding after 60+ presses of CTRL+ALT+DELETE, it's probably not going to and you'll most likely have to hold the power button for 10 seconds to power it off (yes, I know that's not the "healthy" way to do it, but if you have no choice, you have no choice).

Part of the problem is most people don't generally deal with computer problems. So for most they think that close enough is good enough.

Try a different keyboard...it may be sticking.
Other than that you may want to visit our Virus and Spyware section and follow the instructions at the top of the page to determine if you are infected...
Many malware apps attack Task Manager.

          Patio,
Thanks  but sticky keys is not the problem.
I may not have made myself clear in the original post.
The 60+ task mangers were running prior to her opening task manager to close the unrepsonding page/program.
I did recommend a  that she  do a "full system scan" and it did not report anything.

Every indication points to an infection...

She used the lastest version of MC Afee....possibly 2007.

She was also ask to run a manual update to make sure the virus protection was up to date!

I also requested that she try to use a norton free scan, and other  well known virus protection free version...
I agree that it sounds like a virus/spyware or other infection that her virus protection has not been able to locate.

            UPDATE!

McAfee internet security sweep, with site advisor!
is the program that she use. She also used a free virus scan from Norton.
Currently I am looking for a free prograam that will scan for spyware. malware/ adware. Any  recommendations?
