    automatic shutdown in Win XP
    « on: January 05, 2009, 10:54:24 AM »
About a month ago we recently had some unexplained power outages (5 in all) over a period of 3 days.  ince the last outage my sstem will just power off for no reason usually while on the internet or using an application.  Games don't seem to be a problem.  Here are my system specs:

AMD 5600+ X2 Dual Core processor
ECS 6100 SM-M motherboard with NVidia Graphics built in
    Windows XP
    2 GB Memory

Power supply could be stressed from surges...have you swapped power supplies yet?

Does it show a shutdown process or just black screen and off?

What brand and wattage is your PSU ? ?
You may also want to replace the surge suppresser as they are usually good for only a few hits.

The computer itself has been upgraded last year from a P4 2.8Ghz with 1 GB memory and I had that one for 2 yrs.  So about 3 years old.

By chance is there a PCI modem card in this machine ? ?
If so remove it and try it without.
Have you tried a new power strip and or moved the machine over to another outlet ?

I believe it is a board issue since the computer works great when playing games just not so when it is working in Windows or a MS application

This could also point to a Windows issue...no ?

Thought so too so I reformatted and that did not work...went to the store and bought a power supply and a new MOBO will try power supply first then the board I also wondered about a HDD failure...is this a possibility?

Best way to find out is travel to the drive manuf. site and DLoad their FREE diagnostics...
Follow the instructions for creating a bootable CD and run the long test...
This will tell if the drive can be trusted,
