For Windows Server and XP but it should work in Vista:

Try - Install/reinstall Windows Update Client

x64-based versions of Windows - download the WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe package now.

Please see if installing the 3.0 client resolves the problem.

        Good Luck

        Try these:
        1. Download Windows Update Fix to your desktop.
Double click on downloaded file, and allow registry merge.
        Restart computer.
        2. Download, and run Windows Update Repair Tool: http://software.hitoma.com/WURT/
To download the tool, click on I Agree link.
        Restart computer, when done.

don't understand this...are you saying on another PC you cannot download the files and save to a USB stick...????

if that's true you have real problems with your network/lan setup

            Good Luck

If this is 2 weeks old laptop, I'd hurry, and I'd bring it back to the store, before 30 days period expires.
Don't monkey around it anymore, or your warranty may be voided.

Unfortunately it was bought mid November. Not to worried about that as 1979 Sales of Goods Act covers for this beyond the stores 30 day policy.
There are plenty of posts out there about the problem so would like to fix it without sending it back

                A new laptop with only a 30 day warranty ? ?
If you read up on that error message it can be quite a pain to fix...
                I'd take Broni's advice.

                  one thing you could try...

open a command window(window key+r then type cmd), once the command window is open type sfc /scannow(notice the space between sfc and /scannow)....this will check your system
files to insure they are intact....if it finds incorrect files you'll need your windows CD...

                  Good Luck

                    Hi,

Thought I would give up date. After a few mails from the vendor they sent a mail showing how to restore the laptop to factory setting and then go from there. That was done and so far apps like Win updates and msgr are working. Not sure why we did not get the error message reappear when we updated but it hasnt (yet)
