MS retains the copyright to all of its operating systems therefore advising you where to download them would be in breach of the CH rules.

You might be able to buy legit copies on Ebay or similar sites.

Good luck.

heh.

3GB max. have you any idea how big hard drives were back then? Oh wait- they didn't exist in a practically marketable form.

Your second "sentence" which I'm assuming is just that- it's another complete thought, which ideally would be separated by a period from preceding and subsequent thoughts (each of which is known colloquially as a "sentence", doesn't really make a  whole lot of sense.

While you could easily switch between 1.0, 2.0, and 3.1 using the DOS prompt, I have a feeling your main OS is a far newer version of windows, making switching between your versions a lot more complicated then simply  shelling out to DOS.

On the other hand- windows 1,2, and 3 can be run either in an emulator, or, of you're lucky, as DOS applications under newer versions of windows.

Follow Dusty's advice, but be warned- bids for old software can get very high, (FAR more then it's worth) and your more then likely be dissapointed with it anyway.

Be careful not to give any advice that would lead to piracy. Early versions of Windows are still Microsoft copyright products.

if you have an msdn subscription or know someone who does they use
to be downloadable from there....because that's where I got my MS windows 3.1 about a decade ago....

    Good Luck

Except you can't. The early Windows versions that ran on top of MS-DOS need different MS-DOS versions

    1.01, 1.03, 1.04 MS-DOS version 2.0
    2.03 MS-DOS version 3.0
    2.10 MS-DOS version 3.0 or later
    3.0, 3.00a, 3.10, 3.11, MS-DOS 3.1 or higher

So if you are running any Windows version 1 you can't run version 2 or later, if you're running Windows 2.03 you can't run any version 1 or any version 3.

so DOS was NOT backward compatible???? If I had DOS 4 I couldn't run
anything that ran under DOS 2???

      Didn't know that...strange....

OK found my answer...guess that's why stuff like DOSBox and others came about...cause I found instances where MS Windows 1.0 was run with DOS 5.0
      and a few "extras"...extra routines/patches/etc.

      so thanks...learn something every day...!!

Nope. I think all the interrupt vectors were changed; and also interupt vectors added for hard drive usage, which DOS 2 didn't support. (or 1.2MB 5 1/4" floppies or any 3 1/2" floppies.

Half the DOS 4 releases were incompatible with each other. Imagine the fun when people upgraded to a slightly newer version of DOS 4, only to now discover their Hard drives corrupted. (MS changed how they handled Hard Drives, I believe)

yes... that would be either windows 1 or windows 286.

Neither of which will run on post DOS 2 machines. (with the possible exception of DOS 3 or special handling with SETVER)
