    computer freezes
    « on: June 04, 2009, 06:28:53 PM »
I need help with my computer.  It is now freezing up and will not let me do anything at all.  I have to hard boot to try to get it to work again...it starts up and then freezes.

the problem that i had was: there was some antivirus program running that i never downloaded and could not remove off of my computer, so i then went into the msconfig and clicked on the system start up tab and un checked the the unknown antivirus program and restarted the computer.  a system configuration messege popped up and then the computer froze....nothing works the only thing i can do is reboot.  thats it.  help what do i do to fix this??

    thanks,

    Randy

Boot into SAFE MODE, then go into msconfig again, START UP tab.

write down the Registry Path (look to the right of the program) NOTE: you might have to hover the mouse pointer directly to the left of where is says, "location", and slide it over to the left, to be able to see the entire registry path.... Next open a RUN command and type:

    regedit, click OK

Then navigate to the registry location that you wrote down and delete program from the registry

You could also try going into the SERVICES tab in MSCONFIG, click "Hide All Microsoft services", then locate the problematic program/service and disable it

reread my post :)   There are two options!

After you type  regedit into the RUN command, it's simple matter of clicking on the "+" signs next to the HIVES you wish to get to...

Google for a tutorial on REGISTRY basics, because you can seriously mess things up, if you do the wrong thing in the registry

Dangerous sending a novice into the registry.....could end up with a brick.

LOL, actually that's why I suggested disabling the service, as an alternative

            Randy,

See if you can get into safe mode (tap F8) and do a System Restore to before the problem began.

wait wait, no system restore yet  :)   Lets see what Randy posts back with...

I'm actually kind of thinking this is a virus problem like JJ suggested....as opposed to a problematic application

Agreed, probably is an infection, but all he can do is reboot...everything freezes.

Right, everything freezes, but he may be able to get to SAFE MODE ;)
