...and what's your budget?  How much do you want to spend?

I will be using this computer for work, running 5 to 6 programs at the same time two of them are web based, connected to a point to point network.
Cost I was thinking around $1000 but can go higher if needed.

For that price I'd recomend a quad core cpu and for maximum memory, 4gb>, you'll need to run a x64 operating system. Other than that the options are many. You can look at my Intel Core 2 Quad system specs and compare at ~ $1500 just to get an idea.  Happy building!  :)

What are the programs that you will be running?
CAD requires a crapload more than Word.

I think you could build a really decent machine for around $1000.00 to meet those requirements.

Consider if you want to run Intel or AMD, everything after that is pretty standard.
SATA II hard disk, good optical drive, reliable sound card, medium end video card and network card.
Just make sure that you get a case that has good cooling capabilities, and a good solid PSU.
