Is there a way to assess Free DNS Service Performance?
    « on: August 04, 2009, 01:41:09 AM »
    Hi Guys!

I have tried everything from OpenDNS to DNS Advantage in order to make my Web Pages load faster & to ensure a consistent Web Browsing experience!

Have a quick look at the Free DNS Service, I gave a shot to:

OpenDNS service:: Going immensely popular day-by-day with No. of Universities & now even Router Manufacturers tying up with these Guys to offer a Reliable & 'Customized' DNS Service! Primary DNS Server:208.67.222.222; Secondary: 208.67.220.220

DNS Advantage:: An offering from Ultra DNS Guys. Was quick to grab my attention because of its Nodal Point of presence(P-O-P) located in India as well! Primary: 156.154.70.1; Secondary:156.154.71.1

Tree Walk DNS: Made an indepth search against Free DNS & came across the same.Choose anything from 4.1.1.x where x~ 1-6 !

    COMODO Free & Secure DNS:
A new finding just couple of days ago. Am currently using  the same. Primary: 156.154.70.22 & Secondary: 156.154.71.22

Now....Is there an independent way to assess the performance of all the above & more(if any) Free DNS available?Which of these has the least Latency factor & fastest response time? I wish to calibrate the same through an independent resource!

For me, Browsing experience seems to be pretty much same! I have a 2Meg(Theoretical) Net Connection with actual speeds varying b/w 1.66-1.76 Mbps!

One cannot expect more than that limit over here in India! We are an OFFLINE NATION! >:(

While this doesn't answer your question, a different approach to speeding up internet access is to "cache" the initial DNS host name to IP address resolution on your local machine for an extended period of time.  This eliminates the "external" DNS name resolution request for subsequent accesses.

FastCache is a program that does this.  There's an option where you can submit each DNS request to two different DNS servers concurrently.  I think it gathers statistics which will demonstrate which one had lower average response times.  Been awhile since I played with it.

        Hi Dahlarbear! :)

You think this will still work if I have a habit of changing my IP Address on a regular basis? Sometimes, even more than once on a single day!?

I like impersonating someone to initiate some Govt. reforms.Mike Moore is still alive & thrives after Fahrenheit 9/11. Over here in India, 'Whistle Blower' are generally the first persons to get lynched!

e-governance answers all that concerns & gives me a chance to WHIPLASH the Fraudulent Govt. officers & their policies.

Hope you'll remain Sshhh... about this! ;)
