What sort of activities take up hard disk memory?
« on: September 20, 2009, 11:19:42 AM »
My dad got me an eMachine el1300-02h desktop just last week. So I hooked it up, all the software got downloaded, I installed my printer software, blah, blah, blah. Now, I'm kinda obsessed with checking my remaining harddisk space. Ive got 285 GB and have 247 GB remaining. Maybe it's a bit pre-mature to be going ballistic, but, I'd like to know what sort of actions use up space on my hard-disk, besides installing and downloading stuff. BTW, it's not even connected to the Net yet. Im using my dads puter.

Sometimes install leaves many temp files.

Run diskcleanup

start, all programs, accessories, system tools and click diskcleanup

also run:

Run your antivirus

also run:

C:\>dir /s  msinfo*.exe

 C:\>"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSInfo\msinfo32.exe"

start, run [ msinfo32.exe ]

System restore will take a lot of space. Then there are the Temporary Internet Files (adjust allotted space yourself), temp files, etc. Want some advice? Find something else to worry about.
