    Virus Removal and Windows Startup
    « on: January 11, 2010, 06:42:42 AM »
    Hello Everyone,

I recently caught a virus.  When I scanned my PC with my anti-virus called CA, it found SillyDL and a taskbar blocker.  It changed my desktop background to say something like "Your System Has an Infection!" and installed a popup balloon on my taskbar that says I have a virus.

Anyway, I followed the steps in the "Read This First" post on this site, but when I performed Step 3 (SUPERAntiSpyware), did the scan, and rebooted, my computer gets stuck on the Startup.  It stops when Windows says "Saving Your Personal Settings".  It just keeps restarting after a minute of that.  So...needless to say, I can't post any logs until I get that fixed.

    Can anyone help me out?

    Thank You!

EDIT:  I went home last night and tried to boot in to Safe Mode, and that didn't work.  It kept doing the same things...  Trys to log on after restart then trys to shutdown over and over again.  I also tryed to recover with the Windows disk, but I have no idea what to do after it goes to the DOS Windows prompt.

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. The first thing we will need you to do is to go to this link and follow the directions precisely. If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. we prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line. If you can't run any step, just jump to the next one. Please let me know how you are doing or have any questions. Initially, We will need the SuperAntiSpyware, MBAM and HJT logs. Please post any logs that you can generate.

      harry 48,

Thanks for the reply.  The problem is that I can't get my PC to turn on at all.  Therefore, I can't do anything that you have suggested.  I have already read the link in your reply before I posted and when I performed step #3, my PC took a crap after the scan and reboot.  Now it won't turn on at all.  It is stuck in a neverending loop of "loggin on" and trying to shut itself down.

Go to this link to create a Rescue CD or to this site to create a Rescue USB. Carefully follow all the instructions for whichever method you choose.

I finally got it working with the rescue CD's.  I'm running in Safe Mode for the time being.  I'm scared to run SUPERAntiSpyware again though, because the last time I ran it, it crapped.  Should I try again?

Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
        Save Rkill to your desktop.

There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click Rkill and choose Run as Administrator

You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

        Rkill.exe
        Rkill.com
        Rkill.scr
        Rkill.pif

Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately run the following.

        Now download and Run exeHelper.

Please download exeHelper from Raktor to your desktop.
        • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix. A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed. A log file named log.txt will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com Attach the log.txt file to your next message.

Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).
