    Saving Desktop Links.
    « on: January 22, 2010, 05:31:09 AM »
I have over 300 website links on my desktop. all of which require painstaking replacment after an OS reinstall. in future I'd like to avoid this if I can, I've placed all of my favorites into folders and saved them to CD-RWs, and I'm using a device called DesktopOK which saves and restores the desktop icon placement with a few clicks of the mouse, what I'm wondering is, after I've returned the favorites folders to their original location, is there any way I can save the DesktopOK device onto a CD-RW in such a way that it can be operational after an OS reinstall ?   for me this would be an amazing time saver !

No. But what you can (and should) do is use imaging software to create an image of your drive. That way, if you ever need to recover from a serious problem you can restore to the state it was when you created the image.  Everyone should use drive image software. I create images of my system partition twice a week and keep the three most recent images. I save them to a second (and third) hard drive.

Thank you Allan, image software and a 2nd hard drive will be my next choice, I try to research these things before making a decision but was scared off by peoples bad experiances with failing, overheating hard drives, I researched the Seagate Replica backup device for almost a year before buying one, trying to find peoples real world reviews, a dozen different computer websites and I didn't find one real review, only glowing reviews from those in the computer industry, so I trusted them only to have the Seagate Replica fail miserably rendering my computer inoperable. many of the folders it saved were empty !  what image software and hard drive do you recommend ?

That's got to be one cluttered desktop.

I'm curious, why would you put that many links on the desktop, rather than just use bookmarks or favorites?

Most browsers let you export bookmarks or favorites.

U can  try Firefox has a browser. It has a Add On to register your links to any other PC/Laptop. Firefox also makes it ez to back up your links.

This is what it looks like, yes it takes so much time to restore after a problem and I'll probably reconsider doing it again if I'm unable to find a quick way to restore, I just like how quickly it takes me to any of my favorite sites.

FireFox also has a bookmark Toolbar.
It is right above the main screen and holds 35 visible favicons...with a dropdown list that can hold 100's more.

Your system will run a bit snappier when it's not loading over 100 Desktop shortcuts as well...

Imaging sw: I use Acronis True Image. It is the best of breed but is not free. There are a number of good, free alternatives (http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/backupandimage.shtml)

As for hd's, any name brand should be fine - don't go too craze with the reviews (Seagate, WD, Maxtor, etc) - especially if it's a second internal drive. If you're going to add an external drive I suggest you only "plug it in" when you need it. External drives are generally not meant to be "on" all the time.

I just started using FOG. It was formally FreeGhost. It is the Linux version of Ghost and it is free. Try going to the website FOG project.org

So far it seems very promising for home use and enterprise.
