Middle click = mouse wheel, right?  And, this would depend on how the mouse is programmed, right?  The wheel on my mouse is set for Universal Scroll, so it does just that; it will not open a link.

My middle mouse button does both. I can click on links to open them in a new tab and I can easily scroll by holding down the middle button and dragging. Or of course just rotating the wheel.

Only time I install the mouse software is if the mouse has buttons that won't work otherwise.

Well, maybe that accounts for the difference.  I do have Logitech's SetPoint software installed.
