If you don't know the answer, it isn't a dumb question.

So you put your icons in the grey section at the bottom?
But the little text box is black instead of grey?

Right click on your desktop & select Properties>Appearance>Item>Desktop>color>other and you will find an unlimited supply.  :)

thanks but thats not what im looking for. the color for the sketch and tile has to be exactly the same as the wallpaper or it wont blend in. it will just stick out. my friends dont even have a tile or sketch even on a backround that has different colors. i dont know how they did this but im trying to do the same thing.

I don't have xp so I can't test this but give it a try.
Control Panel/System/Advanced/Performance/Settings/Visual Effects/"Use drop shadows for icon labels on the Desktop"

If you google for "transparent icons" you will find it.
XP supports transparent icons but earlier OSs need a small program to get that result.
Let us know how to do it in xp.

Here's the way my desktop appears using those settings.

You should use TweakUI to remove those shortcut arrows.

            Or simply select different icons.
