    Laptop battery will not recharge
    « on: July 17, 2010, 10:48:22 AM »
I have a Compaq nx7010 laptop , ~a 5 year old computer with a battery charging issue that have been going on for at least a year.  Re-charging the battery has been increasingly not working or not working well.  In the past two years I have replaced the charging adapter three times.  It seemed to work the first two times but not the lately.  It is pretty clear that the adapter plug interface with the motherboard is a weak point in the design.  And clearly I need a new laptop.   Until getting one I am looking for a way to recharge the battery externally-that is, not while the battery is in the laptop.  Does anyone know of a way to do this?  What is the voltage of Li-Ion battery?

Another question regarding the purchase of a new laptop is: Is there a laptop brand that has improved this bad design--at least making the adapter plug conection to the motherboard repairable?   Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome!

It is repairable, but requires you to open the case.

The voltage of the battery is found on the label. It can be from 9 to 13 volts. The change rate must be a fraction of the amp hour rate. Even if you charger is rated at 18 volts, do not assume that the pack is 18 volts. It is not.

Example. If the pack is a 3000 ma/hr, then you would try 300ma for ten hours. Fast charging is not a good idea unless you have a "smart" charger that can sense when the pack is overheating.

The point here is to avoid using a home made charger unless you aver well quantified. As for me, I would rather repair the plug and buy a new battery rather that try to buid a charger

Here is aone of many companies that sell custom chargers.

      Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my question about battery charging my laptop.  I did not make myself clear.  The problem is not with a charger/adapter it is with with the lap top's internal connection to the battery and the interface with the charger plug.  Meaning that the connection is probably loose and does not allow for dependable charging.  The plug feels loose. That is why I feel I need to remove the battery for the laptop and charge it externally.  I have tried the new adapter route a number of times and the problem is simply getting worst-i.e. the internal connection is getting worse.  I guess I was hoping for some kind Radio Shack off-the-shelf way to trickle charge the battery.

Regarding fixing the plug.  I agree and will do so once I get a new computer.  To bridge into the new computer I want to keep my old one going a bit longer.

      Thanks again,
      Steve

External charger for recharge outside of laptop. Is NOT an PSU.
No picture available. They claim it is for the 7200 Compaq's.
