Deleted some W7 O\S files fixing Aleuron Trojan
    « on: October 05, 2010, 02:01:54 PM »
    Hi,
A client of mine has an Acer laptop running W7.
I was going thru Computer Hope's (SAS, etc.) procedures for virus removal (MS Security Essentials had found the Aleuron trojan) and made the mistake of deleting some (probably system) files with MS Security essentials. I know, this is not a CH procedure, I wasn't thinking, was in a rush, etc. I don't know what the files were because the computer won't start.
In any case now when I boot his computer it goes into a constant startup repair loop which doesn't fix the problem.
I have several tools available ( 2 computers one with Vista and one with XP, UBCD4WIN, sata ide usb adapters and various Windows 7 -upgrade install disks). I understand you can't do a repair install from a W7 disk.
    I would appreciate any help.
I have tried F8 and safe just send s me back in to start up repair and LKGood doesn't help.
    Thanks,
    vlogg5

You can perform repair installation only from within Windows in case of Vista and Windows 7.

You can try startup repair, or system restore, using these instructions: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/681-startup-repair.html

      thanks.
System restore worked and things were fine until I ran SAS, removed some "Adware" it found and the the whole start up repair process started again. Not booting into regular or safe mode. Just running start up repair. So I tried restore again twice but no luck this time.
When I look at the log file for start up repair it says "root causes c:\Windows\system32\drivers\rdyboost.sys is corrupt".
I have UBCD4WIN. Should I replace the corrupt rdyboost?  If so where would I get a new rdyboost.sys file? My Vista PC? The internet?
      Appreciate the help

I have tried SFC /scannow but it just tell me that there is "scan for boot issues pending run that first"
I have backed up and deleted the rdyboost.sys file using UBCD4WIN but the PC still goes automatically into the scan for boot issues.
Now when the scan stops and says it can't repair I get the following information:
        "Problem event manager Startup repair
        Problem signature 01  6.1.7600.16385
        Problem signature 02  6.1.7600.16385

The rdyboot file cannot be fixed/replaced using any UBCD tool...

Do you have the appropiate Windows CD for this machine ? ?

Sorry to take so long to get back to you. I am as busy as a one armed wallpaper
          hanger.
I tried restore to an earlier time again. Choose one restore point and it
came back "not completed successfully". Didn't reboot but tried another
restore from a different point. Same result.
Rebooted and low and behold the boot was successful and not only
that a pop came up "Computer was restored successfully".
Now on to the original objective of cleaning the pc of infections.
Thanks people for all your help.
          regards,
