What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

there is nothing new but it did start an automatic Windows update that did not finish because of a bad connection if that means anything.

If you can get to a command prompt you can slave another drive (or use a usb drive or floppy) and try dos "copy" commands (ie, copy c:\documents\*.* d:\documents).
