And I agree, as I said above. But ruling out software first isn't a big deal so why not try?

Sorry, I should have said "video card failure or Video driver problems".
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

Yes, almost certainly one or the other.

Okay, so the computer has been left all alone today, but turned on, and nothing has happened. I have no idea what I'm doing to trigger the problem, so when it happens again I'll come back.

I'm leaning toward getting a new computer altogether considering that if I upgraded my video card I'd need to upgrade my mother board and then everything else needs upgrading anyway, lol. I suppose I can just throw my old hard drives into the new unit and get on with it.

Then again, I DO love this old beast...  :-\

Yeah, it's really hard to justify telling someone how to spend their money, but it sure can be nice to treat yourself to new hardware.

It happened again!! I've come back to my computer after leaving it on for the day and it's doing the same old thing. Screen is refreshing REALLY slowly (in a wave from top to bottom) and it's just so generally sluggish to do anything I want to cry. Also, if I try to play a movie on here, I get audio, but the video is black.

So now what? Cos I was asked to post again should the problem recur..

I'd suggest a new video card.

Any particular brands in mind? Don't forget I'm not rich and I have three other hungry mouths to fill, lol.

No. Just be sure to purchase from a retailer who will take it back just in case that's not the issue (though I'm 99% certain it is).

Awesome. Well, thank you for all your help. At least I know more or less what is going on now. I had my suspicions, but it's always nice to be able to get someone elses input.

            Adjust the Hardware Acceleration
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Display.
On the Settings tab, click Advanced, and then click the Troubleshoot tab.
Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to None, and then click to clear the Enable write combining check box.
Click OK, and then click OK.
