    VIRTUAL MEMORY
    « on: March 05, 2011, 02:33:28 PM »
Hi again people.  Another problem with memory.  Keep getting "virtual mem min too low". Which of these is the best sollution:-1) change paging file sizes, 2) add more ram, 3) get an external HD.  My pc hd capacity is 70gb of which 7.2gb is available.  Here's more info if it helps.  Total physical mem 256mb, available phys mem 28mb, total virtual mem 2gb, available virt mem 1.96gb, page file space 666.54mb.  I don't know what all those figures mean but in the virtual mem box, custom size is selected with initial size at 384mb and max size at 1152.  Any help would be appreciated, thxs.

Virtual memory 1.5 times physical memory is normal (256 x 1.5 = 384).  Since your physical memory is very low for WinXP, more Virtual memory is required (1152).  Virtual Memory can never be 0, no matter how much physical memory is available.  Adding more physical memory (RAM) will help a lot.  Adding 1GB (if you have the available slots) would be good.

With only 10% free space on your HD, you probably can't defrag, and that's a problem.  The usually recommended number for free space is 15% to defrag.  If you off load a bunch of files to an external HD that will solve one problem.

Again, you need more RAM.  You will be amazed how much difference adding 1GB of RAM will do for the performance of your computer.
