Do you have protection from viruses and Spyware? How do you connect to the internet? Dial-up? DSL? Other Hi-Speed? How much RAM do you have? Processor? When does it freeze? Random moments?

Hello gdownsu.

You'll have to tell us a bit more - like how much Ram you have, which anti-virus, firewall etc you have installed and for how long this slow-down has been happening & are you receiving any messages.  What kind of Internet connection do you have?  Are you running a pc or laptop & which manufacturer.

There are lots of causes for a computer to run s-l-o-w including viruses, worms, trojans and simply not good enough hardware. Please tell us what your pc consists of..

Thanks

Oh dear, Flame beat me to it, but you see gdownsu more than one asks for much the same info.

     ;D

    Freeware...

AVG Free Home Edition Anti-Virus, SpyBot SD (but don't use the tea-timer feature) AdAware SE & SpywareBlaster, anti-Trojan defence.

User Profile Hive Cleanup Service from MS.

TweakUI for XP (speed up menu's, etc.)

ERUNT with NTREGOPT compresses registry and keeps a backup.

CCLeaner and EmpTemp to clear out obsolete files.

Everest Home Edition computer diagnostic program. Check your monitor refresh rate , as turning mine up from 60Hz to 85Hz improved my computer a ... lot ... with everything working smoother!

    Run CheckDisk and Defrag weekly.

    Anything else?

Anywhere from 512MB to 1024 MB of RAM is good. More if you need it for professional use.

So how does your computer compare?

    XP Compatability Test

      G Down:

Did this problem happen all of the sudden, or has your PC become gradually slower over time?

If it happened suddenly, what changed just prior to the slow down?  Did you add a new hardware device or install a new program or change one of the Windows settings?

Also, is it always slow, or just slow some of the time?  If some of the time, what programs are running when it is slow?
