Defragmenting a disc does not increase free space. In fact, if you are short on space I'm surprised the defrag app will even run. Anyway, the only way to increase space is to delete files.
Having said that, assuming your OS is on C: drive, I'm not sure what d: drive has to do with Windows Updates.
