Got My PC Restored, So Which Programs Do I Delete?
    « on: October 11, 2011, 12:10:54 PM »
I was a bit upset that I got my PC back, new hardrive, motherboard, and all.
Only to find it already had a bunch of programs on there.
I have a Sony VAIO, with Microsoft Vista.

These are the programs it came loaded with.  Which of these can I delete?:

    -Gametap
    -Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer
    -MobiTV
    -AOL Internet Services
-Corel Pain Shop Pro Phone XL
    -Corel Snapfire
    -Extras and Upgrades
    -Grouper
    -Image Converter 3
    -Napster
    -Norton
    -Quickbooks free starter
    -Sonic Stage
    -Sonic Stage Mastering Studio
    -Webroot
    -Windows Defender
    -LiveUpdate 3.3 (symnatec)
    -SpySweeper

      I was going to download:

      1) AVG...ran first scan
      2) Super anti-spyware
      3) MBAM
      4) Spywareblaster
      5) CCleaner and defrag
      6) WOT safe browsing tool
      7) Comodo firewall

So I assume I can delete all that crap they pre-loaded which I posted, including:
      -Norton
      -Symnatec
      -Windows Defender
      -Napster

      and disable windows firewall.

Am I correct, install AVG and get rid of pre-loaded norton and other security programs?

You should only have 1 anti virus app installed. It's your choice which (Norton or AVG). As for uninstalling programs, feel free to uninstall whatever you like, but unless you're going to be low on disc space there's really no advantage to doing so (except for the second AV, of course). And to disable Windows Defender just set the Windows Defender service to Disabled.

        How do you do that?
All it says now is windows defender is turned off, so I guess I am set?

Not necessarily. Go to START - RUN and enter: services.msc (then press ENTER)
Find the Windows Defender service and set it to DISABLED

You only need one anti-virus...having too many causes them to 'run into' each other, thus causing problems with your pc, and possibly major ones in the long run. I would reccomend getting rid of Norton. It basically takes over your pc, and deletes files or programs without asking, especcially on usb's and external HDD's. AVG is much easier, and user friendly, it always double checks with the user before doing things such as deleting stuff. There is a free and paid version, anyone of them does the job
