It's the PSU...89% chance of probability...because if it bluescreens running from CD it can only be MBoard, RAM...or PSU.
Are you positive there is no one you know that you could borrow a PSU from ...even overnite ? ?

The bluescreen happened some time after the installation was finished. I don't know if that makes a difference. It might actually be an issue with the electric supply at the socket. Nobody I know uses a desktop any more. I can only log in in safe mode with command prompt, the anti-virus doesn't work because of a licensing issue. I'm kinda stuck.

BSOD's are rarely if ever a result of an infection...
Where is your product ID that it's asking for ? ?
If you have the PC's basic info you can try calling MS to re-register...they are not the ogres everyone makes them out to be...
Worth a shot at this point.

I installed sp3 and ie8 then I was able to login normally. Windows said I had 6 days to activate but when I clicked the key symbol it said that I was already activated.

I think I might have worked out the problem but I have a couple of questions.

Before I was able to manually install sp3, I had to keep restarting the computer because when I turned it on, it only clicked once and and then hanged without even getting to the manufacturers' logo or booting to windows. Does that mean that it can only be a power supply problem, and not anything to do with the motherboard, hard drive etc? It occurred to me that this is what happened to my old computer before it eventually stopped working. Can an inconsistent electricity supply damage\destroy the psu over time and/or destroy the hard drive? I think this might be the root of the problem.

I think I've solved the bsod issue. It was the video connector and a bit of dust. However, unbeknowst to me some (idiot) ran a recovery disk and switched the product id from a retail to an oem installation because when I tried to activate the computer it didn't accept the key. It took a while for me to figure it out. Is that the only way that a product id would change like that? Can you run a repair install from a recovery disk?

Yes...thats the only way that can happen...
Only a few OEM CD's will allow you to run a repair install...the newer Dell ones for example. All others will want o just wipe and clean install...
What Windows CD do you have is the important question? ?

If it has shiny holograms all over it and says Microsoft it will facilitate a repair install...

          The Guide...

I suggest reading it thru 1st...backup any critical data and printing out a reference copy before proceeding...
Done properly all your data and apps will be retained...
1 slipup and all that will be gone...but you will have a fresh install of WinXP.
