My Asus boots straight into Preload Wizard
    « on: February 18, 2013, 06:00:48 PM »
Ok, so I was reading another post on here with the same problem, but I couldn't follow all of the steps because I don't have a CD drive..
I have an Asus U31F notebook and just yesterday when I turned it on it booted into preload wizard.. I don't want to go through with this because it says I'll lose my files (I just came back from a Europe trip and took 24gb of photos which I haven't had a chance to bak up yet) so I really don't want to lose the lot. It's way out of my league when it starts talking about choosing the first partition/full hd/full hd with 2 partitions... What does this even mean?!? I don't care if I have to wipe my computer clean, I would just like to know if I can recover and back up my photos beforehand!

    Please help!

If it's any help I have a C and D drive (if that means anything) and my photos are on my D drive..

I also have to post this from my iPhone and access the Internet from it too..

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

    1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
    2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
    3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
    4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
    5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
    6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
    7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

Can you borrow a USB CD optical drive from someone? If you can, I can help you retrieve those photos.

Hey Dave, I've done a bit of research, and figured out that taking option one; restore to first partition, is the best choice as it only restores drive C, and my valued data is on drive D..
And to my understanding the second option wipes everything and then recreates a single drive (c:\) and the third option wipes everything and then recreates a drive c:\ and d:\

I ran the first option as I was assured by reading other forum threads that my D drive would remain untouched.. The only problem now is that once that was finished I turned it off and on and it went straight back into the Preload Wizard again...
        Any ideas on this matter?

Ok. If you follow the directions to the letter this will create for you a rescue disk which will boot your computer and will allow you to save your important data. Then, you can wipe the drive and start over again.

We are going to be using a Windows Recovery Environment to help disinfect the system so it may boot again.

Download the OTLPE Standard REATOGO Windows Recovery Environment.
        • Place a blank CD-R disc in to your CD burning drive.
        • Download OTLPEStd.exe and double-click on it to burn to a CD using an ISO Burner. One can be found here.
        • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
        • Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
        • Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
        • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
        • When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
        • When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
        • Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
        • OTL should now start. Change the following settings
        • Change Drivers to Non-Microsoft
        • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
        • When finished, the file will be saved  in drive C:\_OTL\MovedFiles
        • Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system
        • Please post the contents of the OTL.txt file in your reply.

Hi Dave, is it possible that the key which triggers this Preload Wizard to appear is stuck down? I've tested them all and last night some how I got in, and whilst I could I copied all my photos off to a hard drive. But now again when I turn it on this morning it goes back to the preload wizard.
Sometimes if I press f7 whilst it's booting it says 'begin windows 7 (ems enabled)' or something like that, and then I hit enter and it loads normally.. Which leads me to believe that the key is stuck. Nevertheless I've recovered the data I cared about, and if the computer is stuffed then that's less of a problem now.
          Thank you for your help

If you mean the key on your keyboard why not try another keyboard?
