    Dual layer CD wont read?
    « on: March 09, 2013, 03:20:14 PM »
I am trying to load a copy of Adobe CS4 onto a computer.
CS4 is on two CD's, the second one is a dual layer.

I have just built this computer and tried to instal CS4, the first disk worked ok, but the second one doesnt seem to be recognized.

"My Computer", when I go to properties, comes up as RAW?

Do I need a certain type of player to run this CD to install the program.

Hmm, I just checked the CD on my Dell and it sees all the files OK.

I haven't come across this type of problem before, your help would be appreciated. ;D

    Thank you ImnoGuru

The burner on the PC you are installing to needs to be a dual-layer also...

Sounds like an "ahem" copy of Photoshop which we don't assist with.

      1. There aren't any dual-layer CDs. only DVDs.

      2. You cannot read a DVD in a CD drive.

      3. Any DVD-ROM drive (read only) or DVD-RW drive (read/write) will read a PRESSED dual-layer DVD disk, assuming neither drive nor disk is defective. Very old (10 yr old +) DVD-ROM drives may not read BURNED dual layer DVD disks.

Thanks Salmon Trout, that sounds like exactly the scenario I have.

In my recent research of CD players, I found out that even CD/DVD/RW may not be able to read Dual Layered Disks unless they have DL initials on the front somewhere.
However there are some manufacturers that dont put the DL on their players yet they are able to read and write these disks.

There just seems to be no cohesive standard. Which is quite surprising really, as there are really only a few manufacturers.
They manufacture their components for other companies and they rebrand them in their own unit.
Much the same as TV's & radios I suppose.

You seem a bit confused about device terminology. A CD player will only read CD disks. All CDs are single layer. Just about every DVD device made in the last 10 years will read all formats.

Thanks Salmon Trout, I am truly confused.
All my research from different "people" has only added to the confusion. Each person has an opinion (that seems unfounded I might say) about the ability of different units. :-\

Maybe I should just search on the net! Coz everything you find on the net is true..... Isn't it?   ;)
No huh.. Ow well.....  :( No real surprise there.

That's why I like coming here to Computer Hope. I like getting accurate, cohesive information that I can rely on, plus I have made some fabulous friends as a bonus.

          Thank you one and all.

See, even in your reply Salmon Trout, I have learned something new.
I didn't know all CD's are single layer, and in patio's reply

The burner on the PC you are installing to needs to be a dual-layer also...

Oh and patio, just for clarity, I am not looking for assistance on the contents of a CD,... just the differences between CD, DL and DVD Rom and RW's ..

Well, I have several players of different types to make a selection. So I'll make a best guess and put it in my Dell Tower for a test run. Then insert it in the tower I am working on.

Hopefully I have one that is suitable.

          Thanks again ImnoGuru. :D

Why don't you just read the Wikipedia pages about CD and DVD disks and drives?
