    Thanks again PCdoc. I did this already and Sony says no firmware updates available. The easiest and cheapest (at least cheap) is buying a new drive.

      A borrowed external drive worked fine. Just found out TigerDirect has a store (formerly CircuitCity) about 20 miles away. Next time I am in the area I'll pop in. Thanks to all for your help.
