    Viruses
    « on: October 29, 2005, 07:36:49 PM »
I use windows xp on broadband connection to the internet.  Just recently I have been getting a popup saying the kernels32.exe is trying to access the internet.I keep denying this but the message keeps on recurring.  I have been told that this kernel 32.exe is a trojan vicsfram (whatever that is) so I ran a virus scan using Norton systemswork Professional 2 and found a virus :vxh8jkdq5.exe  a virus :vxh8jkdq6.exe    a virus :vxh8jkdq7.exe and a virus :z13.exe.   Norton recommended that I disable my Systems Restore,do an update and run a virus scan.  I have done this twice but I cannot delete the viruses.   I have also run Adware SE but that did not help   Can someone help me please.

      If you fail...

      Download, install & update...
      CWShredder
      Ad-Aware
      Spybot S&D
AVG Free (Set options to 'scan all files')

Turn off System Restore if applicable. (ME & XP users)

      Run Disk Clean-Up
      Run CWShredder
      Run Ad-Aware
      Run Spybot
      Run AVG Free

      Re-start in Safe Mode
      Re-run AVG Free

If you click the link at the foot of this post you can use HOUSECALL ON-LINE SCANNER

And you can also find a link to KILLBOX.

That should remove them for you.

        Good evening FED
I did as you suggested and not only have I eliminated the four viruses with the AGV Antivirus it found another five viruses that the Norton missed.  However I still cannot eliminate the kernels32.exe.  What I have done is to use my Zone Alarm programme control to "Kill"the dammed thing from popping up.  Will this suffice?  New problem.  Should I buy the AGV Antivirus and dump the Norton or keep the Systemsworks.

          Good evening Mac,
Thank you for your assistance.  Unfortunately it was a bit too technical for me.  My grandchildren advise me to stay with paper and pencil.

Just stick with AVG, it's free.

kernels32.exe is a trojan so AVG may not get it.
            It's horses for courses stuff.
Ewido is pretty savage, let's test it first  :)

It's fun experimenting on someone else's computer.  ;)

            My pleasure,
Just take your time. Your Grandchildren must be wise indeed. The pencil is mightier than the sword I suppose, but what happens when someone turns up with an eraser?

I use AVG Free Home Edition having dumped Norton long ago. You may find that Norton has a list of files and folders which are excluded from scanning. I would delete all entries in that list and run the scan again.

1 kernels32.exe has been eliminated.  Just one more piece of advice if you please.  I am a sucker for "You must have" adverts and have on my computer :1click pc fix,  Enido security,  Norton systemsworks 2004 professional,  Ad -Aware SE,  Window Washer,  Zone Alarm  and Registry Fix.  Are all these necessary?

              Not really.

The things I use you'll find on the link below. All are freeware.

It was the Ewido that got rid of the offending article.     My thanks to all who helped me with my problem.  Should any of you ever get to W.A. iou a few beers.
