No sound after XP home reinstall
« on: November 12, 2005, 04:20:32 PM »
PC specs:  AMD Duron 1.3
Kobian  KT266a FDSX
512 DDR RAM
30GB HDD

I've recently reinstalled XP Home and haven't been able to get sounds other than the odd beeps when there's an error or something.  No music/speech from any media as there aren't any drivers installed.  I know this can be done from my motherboard disk but up to now to no avail as Win XP informs me these are unsigned drivers - they install but with exclamation marks.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Download & install the correct drivers for your sound device.

I don't have a separate soundcard, mine appears to be onboard - will try to reinstall drivers again from my motherboard disk - I did manage to do it after a reinstall last year but can't now remember how!

    Barrow:

Please explain: Exactly what in Device Manager has an exclamation mark?

Is there more than one exclamation mark?

When you right click on each one with an exclamation mark and choose Properties, what does Windows indicate for the device status?

    Let us know,
    Doc

Hi - there's C Media AC 97 Audio Device which is with exclamation mark.  The status is as follows:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

I've been thru the troubleshooter without results.  What's getting to me is that I know I can install the drivers, but can't remember just what to do!!!! I feel several senior moments arriving all at once.

Right click that device in Control Panel/System/Device Manager and choose uninstall.
Then run the C-Media install program. It will be on the CD you recieved with the MBoard.
Ignore the not signed by MS warning in the installation.
