older version still installed
« on: April 27, 2006, 05:13:00 PM »
have a problem installing my digital camera software. had it on before and uninstalled it because the pc didn't recognize or whatever the program. now that I want to try it again I get the message that there is an older version installed which has to be uninstalled first. trouble is, there IS no older version loaded. can't find anything remotely similar to the word "Nikon" anywhere. how do I fix this problem. Oh yes, being a real antique myself, I'm still running Windows 98.

I suggest that you download and run CCleaner. http://www.download.com/CCleaner/3000-2144_4-10507755.html?tag=lst-0-1 ... When you install it, open the program, and click on the registry blocks. If necessary, specify what it needs to look for, and run the tool. Becuase it is VERY likely that it will find at least one error, it will prompt you to fix these errors. When you tell it to fix all of the selected, you need to backup the registry (it will do it for you if you accept it). I hope this helps...

ccleaner is safe, trust me. :)
    Only 2 things to remember...

    Ccleaner
(During install, uncheck the Yahoo Toolbar option)
(After install, set Options>Advanced> 'Uncheck the 48 hour box')

Unless you want a Yahoo Toolbar.
Unless you want to save temp files more recent than 48 hours.

infoseeker..... You mentioned using the cleaning part of system mechanic 5 .......  Unless you know what your doing when using that program ,you could easily have removed items which are critical to startup and run.
CCLeaner on the other hand is safe and very easy to use ........ just set it up as Fed has outlined , or if you wish step by step details.......... follow these instructions...   http://www.computerhope.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?num=1144186359

If you don't know the answer, it isn't a dumb question.

I use CCleaner on a daily basis. As long as you backup your registry information as it prompts you to, then the operation is very easily reversed. I've never heard of CCleaner causing any problems however.

problem fixed. Nikon said to do: "staart" - "run" - "regedit" - and look in both "HKEY_local machine"  and then "HKEY_current user" for any leftover dirs or files with the name and simply delete them. worked wonders  ;D
