Wireless Network Config
« on: June 26, 2006, 08:04:05 PM »
I just got my first wireless router and I've got the network all set up, but I can't connect to it via laptop. The laptop has a Dell 1390 wireless card and when I try to connect to the network it says its connected and the router says it's connected, but the laptop hangs when aquiring network access and won't go any further... any ideas?

Did you run the network setup wizard?

Yes, and i'm using the Dell WLAN card utility not windows default to manage the wireless connection.

The router is DHCP with my ISP and then I manually assign IP's to the computers within the network.

Have you tried enable the DHCP on your router? On all computers, open network connections->Local Area Connection->property,
in Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) click on Properties then set Obtain IP address automatically and Obtain DNSserver address automatically. This should work well.

Generally When i set up small networks i make em like this

                                                                               /--------Computer1 DHCP Client
        (Internet)-----(Router(Internet DHCP Client ))     |
                           (Router(LOCALNET DHCP Server))-{
                                                                               \-------Computer2 DHCP Client

Also when i set up a Wireless network i always turn off all the Security(WEP/WAP) Get all the computer connected , and then i turn on the Security and reconfigure the computers, i find this to be the easyest way,

and always have a computer you can connect by wire to the router so you can reconfigure it

        Router Will look like this
        Internet Connection Settings.
        IP address : DHCP
        DNS : DHCP

        Localarea Connections Settings
        IP Address 192.168.0.1
        Subnetmask 255.255.255.0

        DHCP server Settings.
        DHCP server on/off on
        IP Address Pool 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.255
        DNS Forwarding on/off  on
        DNS Server 192.168.0.1
        Subnet mask 255.255.255.0

options for DNS forwarding May be under NAT, also the options some routers Give you for DMZ are not entirley what DMZ Means

that's exactly how i have mine set up to... but I do have WAP on... maybe i'll try turning that off and just getting the network established and then secure it. i have my personal computer always connected via wire then i have two laptops that will be wireless. i'll try that tonight, thanks.

that worked like a charm :) i disabled all security, laptop connected, and then i added back security and i'm good to go. thanks a lot. on other question, i'm using WAP and not WAP2. is there a great deal of difference in security between the two or should i be ok with WAP? i'm not even sure if the dell 1390 supports WAP2. thanks.
