pc locks up

have a compaq 5000 series that had win me on it  bought win xp pro. installed ok  about a week later started locking up, looked in logs and has a few acpi errors.comp will lockup even at login. swapped memory did not help.went into the bios setup to look in there and it locked up there.is xp not able to work on this comp?   maybe put   win98SE on it??

   thanks for any help   i no like compaq

Try to install XP again, to see if the problem still is there. If it is still there then it is a hardware problem.

You could try to run a Linux Live CD on it. If it locks up, it's hardware. If not, it's just Windows.

Forget the live CD and just do a install.
