Applications crash in XP
« on: July 30, 2006, 09:14:00 AM »
Hello,

I have two applications that keep crashing in XP Home.  One is java-based TrendMicro Housecall, the online virus scanner.   The other is a (probably C++) freeware program called Atmosphere Lite (beta 6.0).

I've re-installed XP Home, although it wasn't a clean re-install.  I just installed over the old settings.  I've also run RegCleaner.  Neither helped.

Can anyone think of anything that might work?

Thanks!

An "over the top" or "dirty" install certainly doesn't solve ALL problems and can sometimes add new ones. I amsure a real formatting and install would fix it, but not clear if you want to go that far. How big an issue is that to you?

GMan is talking sense.

One quick fix you might try is to temporarily disable the Windows firewall:

1. Click Start > Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel, double-click Firewall.
3. In the Windows Firewall dialog box, select Off and select OK.
4. Try the online virus scan once more.
5. When finished scanning, turn the firewall back on.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I've even tried killing a bunch of processes just to see if it would make a difference.  No luck. Unfortunately, I'll probably need to perform a new install.  It's going to cost time, but oh well  :(

I just hope the same problem doesn't arise again eventually...

It will because it's Windows!

A good format and reinstall will solve most Windows problems though, for a while.  ;)

I know. I'd love to switch to Linux, but I can't get Linux versions of my software.

The reinstall is going to be a hassle 'cause I'll need to reconfigure lots of applications.  Oh well, that's life.

And what version of software would that be?
