Enabling Desktop tab in Display Properties (WinXP)

hi I wish to change the wallpaper of my Windows XP system but the Desktop tab in Display properties is disabled. How do i enable it
Please help.

scan for bugs....has anyone played with the reg?.....boot pc into safe mode...keep tappping the f8 on boot and scroll down using the arrow keys ...and chose the last good config...

    Ritu.....If you go start /control panel / display ..........are any of the tabs active ?

    Ya all the tabs are enabled. I can open the desktop tab as well but
    Background list, Browse and Position buttons are disabled.

    Hi i have restarted my system with the Last Good configuration option as well but still The background list, browse and position buttons on Desktop tab of display property are disabled.
