    MSN Messenger forever signs on
    « on: October 21, 2006, 06:15:42 PM »
Ok, so now my MSN has started to act up.

What will happen is that i'll try to sign in and it will go forever without actually signing on. I can log on on someone elses computer, and infact i can even log on on another side of my computer, just not on my side of it. Yes of course i've uninstalled and installed it back on a few times but that does nothing. The thing is though that you know how with the new msn how when you log on once it remembers your colour scheme and display pic and shows it to you as you log on? I still get that even after i've uninstalled it and installed it back on which means that somewhere it must be hiding a file which could be the problem. Just one other thing that i'll mention is how if i'm signed in on another side of the computer and then try to sign in on my side it will log me off as if it has logged me on, but it hasn't of course. I've asked other ppl and they say they don't see me logged on at those points either so it's not just that it's not displaying it to me.

Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

EDIT: oh and one other thing i should mention. I thought that it might be being blocked so i put msn on my trusted sites and it put a * beside it, i don't know if that means something else is blocking it or what, but it's the only one on my trusted sites that has that.

When you uninstall use a cleaning program to clean traces left behind, including your user data
Try http://www.ccleaner.com and clean the registry with it after you uninstall, removing all MSN Messenger related items
Also, delete the MSN Messenger folders in your user data and program files folders
Then install it again and see if it works
    Hope this helps

Ok, so i ran ccleaner after i'd uninstalled, and deleted the file from program files (which i had actually been doing already), but still didn't work. And still it remembered who i was which still isn't making any sense.

      Try deleting this folder - C:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger
I think this will clear everything, including custom emoticons etc
      Hope this helps

I'm using windows live, I would change versions, but that seems to be the new standard now when downloading

Does it freeze or simply try to log on without success?

It doesn't freeze, it will just keep on signing in without ever actually getting on

Are you routing it through your firewall?

if you mean do i have a firewall installed then yes, it should be allowing it through seeing as i checked that though. I have a bunch of programs that could be blocking it though even though i've tried shutting them down and allowing msn through on them

And did that have any success?

shutting them down? no, it still just tries to sign in with no success.

Did you use the registry cleaner on CrapCleaner as well after uninstalling?

I'd try to run the program from safe mode with Network Support, see if you can log in (If MSN Live works under safe mode, that is), restart, and then use 'normal' Windows to see if it functions again.. Bit far fetched, but perhaps you get lucky.
