Power Supplies
« on: October 28, 2006, 11:37:45 AM »
Greetings, I hope someone can help me.

Can you replace a 300watt PS, with a larger one, without causing trouble? :-[

Just replaced this PS, six months ago. 300watt.

Have since remoced two 40 gig HDs and replaced them

with one 80gig unit.

System has been acting sluggish, and this morning would not start.

Figure my PS went South last night. ;)

You didn't say what brand of 300w. PSU you got. An el cheapo Chinese POS 800w PSU is worse than a 350 watt Antec. You get what you pay for.

Some info about ALL of the components would be helpful. What exactly is covered by "would not start"? Totally dead? A few lights but no boot?

Details, details. See below.

I am not being smart here, but my question was,

Can I put a larger Power Supply in my PC,  without causing any problems???

Like going from 300watts to a 400watt unit.

I am at the library, using a PC,

When I pushed the start botton, to turn on the power, nothing happened.

No lights, humming, sound thru the speakers, nada. As you put it "Totally Dead".

The PS was purchased at Comp USA, could not tell you who made it.

Dell PC
200gig
Intell
80gig HD
DVD
CD-R

Thats all I am rembering right now.

Hope that helps

The short answer is yes, you can, as long as you have the appropriate adapter for your specific mother board - 20 vs. 24 pin.

The wattage is not an issue.

Hope that helps. Get a good book to read while you're there.  ;)

Thought all Powes Supplies, had all the fittings or plugs, and adaptors needed.

How do you know what you need? :-[

Look at your motherboard, or at the main (large) connector from the previous PSU, or check the specs from the motherboard maker's site from the library computer. (You didn't say what it was.)

No, there are two possibilities. Don't buy the wrong thing. ;)
