AMD Sempron 3100+
« on: December 05, 2006, 08:36:30 AM »
Hi all....I purchased a Genius MousePen Tablet for drawing on the computer.  The requirements include a pentium 166 processor or faster.  I have an AMD Sempron 3100+, with 256kb L2 cache.  Is this equivalent?  Do you think the MousePen Tablet will work with my system? Thanks

Your AMD Sempron 3100+ is much faster than a pentium 166 processor.  So, it should run just fine.

Thank you so much for your response.  I have been trying to figure it out for a week or so!  I think that my AMD Sempron is the least (productive?) because it was on the cheaper side.  I was not sure what the real difference is between pentium and sempron.   THANKS!!!!!

A comparison of different types of processors is a rather technical area.  But, there's really no need to get into such details for your situation.  The reason is that the minimum requirement of a pentium 166 indicates a Penium running at 166MHz clock speed, or processor speed, which is far slower that the 1.8GHz (this equals 1,800MHz) Sempron 3100+.  The 166MHz speed rating indicates an early Pentium (equals Pentium I), which preceeded Pentium II, Pentium III, and Pentium IV processors.  In other words, a pentium 166 is a very old processor, while the Sempron 3100+ came onto the market much later, and even the first Sempron processors were much faster than that 166MHz Pentium.

I read that the ADM Sempron 3100+ are the "weakest" processors.  I did buy my computer new but it was about $400.  It is missing a 64 bit something that the later Sempron's have...do you think that might effect the Tablet working?  Do you think the Tablet program will run slowly?

Thanks again for all of your help!  I am finishing graduate school, however when it cmes to computers I am not too smart :-/

Let me re-phrase that a little.  It WILL run fine.  ::)

Believe me, comparing the Pentium 166 to a Sempron 3100 is like comparing a horse-carriage to a space rocket. There should be no problems ;)

And an AMD 3100 is far from being a "weak" processer unless you would be comparing it to the latest and greatest...you should get many years of servicable use out of that CPU.
