Well there have been a lot of great posts on this forum,  when people wanted to try out linux. I recommend reading this thread. Its when I was first giving linux a try, and a very nice member WillyW pointed me in the right direction.

Go to the distribution sites like Ubuntu.com or fedorafourms.org

      awww....  <scuffing toe>  ...

      :)

I'd forgotten that.   I'm glad you provided the link.   And I'm still glad for you that it worked out.

I see you are new here.    In case you missed it,   in Mich431's post is a clickable link.   Hover your mouse of the word  "this" in his post up there, and you'll find it.   It is in his sentence, "I recommend reading this thread".
The color difference for clickable links in this forum is not significant enough.... sometimes it is hard to see a link.

      Good luck with it.

      :)

Thanks for that link.  Lot's of interesting info.  I've finally become interested enough to order a few CD's of a couple of different versions of Linux.  Have I pretty much lost all of my free time?

Do you have some sort of broad band connection?     If so,  download the distro(s) you want to try.
I guess you could download them if you are on dial-up,  but it would take a good long while!   :)

This is one good, legit use for bittorrents.

      Probably.   :)

      Seriously,   ... it depends.
I wish I had the hardware and time to devote to it.

Which versions/distros are you going to order/download/try ?

See, I'm on a very slow dial-up connection, which is why I opted to get the CD's.  I figure, if I like it enough, then I can try downloading a few different versions.  Although, Puppy Linux is pretty small, so I might give it a try while I wait for the CD's to get here.

I went with Ubuntu because it's what I tend to see mentioned more often.  I also requested Kubuntu and Edubuntu simply because they're available.  Ha.  If you know of any other versions available through free distribution CD's, please let me know.

I'd like to try out as many versions as I can, but doing so isn't all too easy with my lousy connection.

      Gotcha.
      Makes sense.

Wellllll....   you might not like the first 3 that you try....  there's always one more.

Got some sort of download manager or something.... so you can stop and resume?

Not off the top of my head.

What you need is a local friend,  with a high speed connection.

Yessir, I've got the lovely Free Download Manager.  But I've got the Fallout 3 tech demo at the top of my list.  I'm sure you understand.  Ha.

Agreed.  Both tend to be hard to come by around here.  Heh.
