Old hard drive to new hard drive???
« on: July 25, 2007, 01:53:44 PM »
My computer hard drive crashed and burned and I have a new one on the way.  My question is this.....can I get ANYTHING off of my old hard drive and put on my new hard drive?  I have an external if that helps.  Thank you in advance for your help.

If your hard drive no longer works, I hate to say that I doubt you'll get anything off of it unless you take it to some professionals and that gets really expensive. Did you have any backup copies of important files? Sure hope so... sorry to hear it crashed.  :-\

If its completely dead you could try freezing it.

That was a really interesting article..... does it actually work? I had a guy here at work who's hard drive crashed I just took it apart to see how it all work. He needed some information from it but I had never heard of this before.... I wish I had then.

I've never had a chance to try it myself because my harddrives always crash under warranty. :D But apparently it has worked for some people. It doesn't fix the drive, but it might give you enough time to get important files of it.

Hook it up as a slave drive in a working machine and see if it's seen in Windows Explorer...if so copy and burn the data you need.

How do you know it's faulty, did you test it?

I talked to Dell and they ran me through some tests and told me I needed a new hard drive.  It's under warranty so I don't think they would be pulling my leg since I don't have to pay for it.

You could still use the slave method to retrieve your data before you send it in for a replacement...
