Prior----Problems booting, problems shutting down, kept getting boot of the internet, basically a messy hard drive.

It is not a new hard drive. The hard drive was removed and reformatted using a usb connection via another machine.

The disc used is the one that came with the machine. XP Pro service pack 2.

If it is not a SATA drive the only reason for this error message would be a loose cable or disk failure.
Double check your connections and also DLoad and run the HDD manuf. diagnostics to check the health of the drive.

It is not a SATA drive, so I will run the manufacturers diagnostics as suggested. Will keep you informed.
