CD/DVD-RW Driver isnt reading DVD-R's

I have a Compaq Presario notebook and I'm trying to burn some MP3's onto a DVD-R and my computer just wont read the disk's. I've tried Sony DVD-R's and a Nexxtech DVD-R, so it's not the disk's. I'm thinking I just need to update the drive but I have no idea how to do that, so some help would be amazing.

The drive is a Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R2512
It's standard.
The status says it's working properly.
Driver Date:      7/1/2001
Driver Version:  5.1.2535.0


I'm probably giving un-needed info but I don't know what you might need.

Just tell me what I gotta do.

DVD-ROM

This is your problem. It's not a burner. It only reads DVDs, CDs.
