    gui_dat.exe
    « on: May 15, 2008, 12:35:07 PM »
My xp system now takes 6 to 8 minutes to boot.  Ran diagnostics, virus scan, spyware scan and removed unused stuff.  Used Startup Cop and stopped everything I could.  No change.  Noticed startup cop was unable to disable one file -- gui_dat.exe.  Is that a valid file? how can I find out? I found it in windows\system32.  If I rename it or delete it will I be able to reverse it?

Well, there is no gui_dat.exe in my system32 folder, (Windows XP Pro sp3) and I cannot find it via a Google search. have you spelled its name exactly as you see it?

Yes, of course.  I copied it correctly. I also googled the filename and tried to look it up in microsoft's knowledge base but got nowhere.  Is there a good site where valid filenames are posted?

Why don't you rename it to gui_dat.old and see what happens? You are hardly likely to forget what its previous name was.

        Scan Suspicious File(s)

        Visit Virustotal
(If more than one file needs scanned they must be done separately and logs posted for each one)
        • Click Browse and enter the file path.
        • Next click Send File
          • Your file will possibly be entered into a queue which normally takes less than a minute to clear.
        • This will perform a scan across multiple different virus scanning engines.
        • Important: Wait for all of the scanning engines to complete.
        • Copy and then Paste the link to the results in the next reply.
